Duong Dong, the middle of the map

The island's town sits halfway down the west coast, at the mouth of the Duong Dong river. It has the night market, the Dinh Cau shrine, the fish sauce barrel houses and the most central pickups for every tour.

What the town actually is

Duong Dong is where islanders live and shop, and it looks like a Vietnamese town rather than a resort: motorbikes, markets, small hotels, a river crowded with fishing boats. It is not quiet and its town beach is not one of the island's showpieces, but it puts you within reach of everything. For a day-tour stay it is the practical choice: every pickup window from here falls in the middle, never the earliest or the latest.

Long Beach (Bai Truong) starts here, at the Dinh Cau headland, and runs south for more than 20 km. Hotels along its northern end are in our Duong Dong or Bai Truong zone depending on where they sit.

Dinh Cau and the sunset

Dinh Cau is a shrine on a rocky reef at the mouth of the Duong Dong river. It began as a thatched shrine and was rebuilt in its present form in 1937. It is dedicated to Ba Chua Ngoc Nuong Nuong and to Cau Tai and Cau Quy, guardians of fishermen. Its festival falls on the 15th and 16th days of the 10th lunar month; it was ranked a provincial relic in 2012.

The rock is a sunset spot from about 17:00 to 18:00, since the sun sets over the sea on this coast. Sunset on Phu Quoc ranges from about 17:40 in early November to about 18:31 in early July.

The night market and what to eat

The Duong Dong night market is officially Cho dem Bach Dang, formerly called the Dinh Cau night market. It opens daily 17:00 to 22:00 and is busiest 19:00 to 21:00. Food stalls are at the front, souvenirs and local products at the back.

  • Goi ca trich: raw herring fillet mixed with grated coconut, onion, shallot and chilli, with a dipping sauce.
  • Bun quay: shrimp, fish and squid in broth, where you mix your own dipping sauce.
  • Nhum (sea urchin): usually charcoal-grilled with salt, pepper and lime.
  • Ruou sim: wine from ripe sim berries fermented for about a month.

Fish sauce and pepper

Phu Quoc fish sauce was the first Vietnamese product to receive a national geographical indication, in 2001, and in October 2012 "Phú Quốc" was registered in the EU as a Protected Designation of Origin. The sauce is fermented for 12 to 15 months in hardwood barrels; more than 100 producers keep more than 7,000 barrels and employ over 1,000 workers.

Pepper is the other crop the island is known for. A garden at Suoi Da is a little over 1 km from town, and another at Khu Tuong about 15 km out; in March the clusters turn red at harvest. Our north island day starts at a pepper garden near town.

A short trip inland: Suoi Tranh

Suoi Tranh is a forest stream at Suoi May hamlet, about 9 km from Duong Dong. Tickets were about 30,000 VND for adults and 20,000 VND for children in 2026, and it opens about 07:00 to 21:00. It has most water from May to November; in the dry months it can be a trickle. The free VinBus route 20 stops at Suoi Tranh and at Hung Vuong street in Duong Dong, on its run between Grand World and Bai Vong port from 05:30 to 16:00; riding free requires a VinWonders, Safari or Grand World ticket.

Season on the west coast

In the dry north-east monsoon, roughly November to April, the west coast around Duong Dong and Bai Truong is calm and clear, and the sunsets are reliable. In the rainy south-west monsoon, roughly May to October, the same coast has big waves and rough sea, and swimming in front of town is less pleasant. That is also when the squid boat may move from this side to An Thoi.

When to skip the town

  • If you want a quiet beach outside your door; Duong Dong is a busy town.
  • If you are visiting May to October mainly to swim; the east coast is calmer then.
  • If your plan is all boat days; An Thoi saves you 40 to 50 minutes each way.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is Duong Dong a good base for day tours?

Yes. Every tour's pickup window from Duong Dong falls in the middle, and the squid boat often leaves from this side.

When is the night market open?

Daily from 17:00 to 22:00, busiest from 19:00 to 21:00.

Can we swim in town?

In the dry season the west coast is calm. From May to October waves are bigger; swim only where flagged and when lifeguards are on duty.

Is Dinh Cau worth it if we see sunset on a tour?

It is a short walk from most town hotels. The squid boat gives you a sunset at sea; Dinh Cau gives you the town's version from the rock.
