Coastal road through green forest towards the Ganh Dau headland in north Phu Quoc

Day tours · By road · North

The north by road: pepper, forest, Ganh Dau

A road day that needs no boat and runs in most weather: a working pepper garden, the forest road along the national park, the Ganh Dau cape facing Cambodia, lunch over the water at Rach Vem, then a beach afternoon or the Vinpearl Safari.

This is the day for people who want to see how the north of the island looks away from the resorts, without getting on a boat. It is also our fallback when the sea cancels a south-island day: the route is inland and along sheltered coast, and it runs in rain. Most of the time is spent in the vehicle or on short walks; nothing on the route is strenuous.

The north is quieter than the south. The road from Cua Can to Ganh Dau runs through forest, with few houses and few fuel stations, and the fishing villages at the end are small. If you want sand, rides and shows, the Safari option or a separate day at the parks is the better use of your time.

Pickup windows by zone

ZonePickup windowWhy this order
An Thoi (south)07:15 – 07:45Furthest from the route; about 40 – 50 min to Duong Dong
Bai Truong (Long Beach)07:45 – 08:15Collected on the way north
Duong Dong (town)08:15 – 08:45Pepper garden is a short drive from town
Bai Dai (north-west)10:00 – 10:20Picked up on the way to Ganh Dau; joins after the pepper garden

The van runs south to north, so the south pays with an early start and Bai Dai guests join late and miss the pepper garden. Bai Dai guests who want the garden can ask for a Duong Dong pickup instead. The exact minute for your hotel comes the evening before.

The windows rest on published drive times: about 40 to 50 minutes from Duong Dong to An Thoi, and 25 to 30 km, or about 40 to 50 minutes, from Duong Dong to Ganh Dau by car. See pickup zones and times for hotels outside the zones.

Hour by hour

Step 1

The north island day, in clock time

The Rach Vem walkway over the shallows at midday

07:15 – 08:45 · Pickup run. South to north through the zones. Wear shoes you can walk on a garden path and a wet walkway in, and bring swimwear if you plan the beach afternoon.

08:45 – 09:30 · Pepper garden. A working garden near Duong Dong. Phu Quoc is known for black pepper and visitors can walk among the vines; in March the clusters turn red and farmers pick them. Pepper is sold at the garden; buying is optional and the stop is the same length either way.

09:30 – 10:20 · The forest road. North on the road to Cua Can, then onto the road to Ganh Dau, which runs through forest along the edge of Phu Quoc National Park. The park covers more than 31,000 ha of the north of the island. This is a drive, not a hike; we stop once where the road is safe to pull over.

10:20 – 11:15 · Ganh Dau cape and beach. The north-west tip of the island. On a clear day you can see Cambodia's Koh Seh island a few kilometres offshore. The beach below is short, shelves gently and is usually calm and clear in the dry season.

11:30 – 13:15 · Rach Vem. A fishing village 6 to 8 km from Ganh Dau, where wooden walkways run several hundred metres out to houses over the water that serve seafood. Lunch is there. In the dry season red starfish gather in the shallows near shore.

13:30 – 16:00 · Safari or beach. Safari guests are dropped at Vinpearl Safari for the bus tour and the open zoo. Everyone else goes back to the Ganh Dau beach to swim. The van collects the Safari guests at 16:00.

16:00 – 18:20 · Drop-off run. North to south: Bai Dai first, Duong Dong from about 16:55, Bai Truong, then An Thoi last, around 17:50 to 18:20.

Clock times

These are our planned times. Starfish, traffic and how long the Rach Vem kitchen takes move the afternoon by up to half an hour; the 16:00 Safari pickup is fixed.

Rach Vem and the starfish: the rules

Rach Vem is known as the starfish village because of the red starfish that collect in its shallow water in the dry season, roughly December to April, when the sea is shallow and clear enough to see them near shore. In rain or under heavy cloud you may see few or none; we cannot promise them.

  • Do not lift starfish out of the water or use them as photo props. Handling can kill them, and visitors are asked not to take, carry off or dry them.
  • Walk the shallows in reef shoes or sandals, not barefoot.
  • The walkways are wooden and wet in places; hold children's hands.
  • Seafood at the floating houses is priced per dish, about 150,000 to 300,000 VND a dish in a 2026 report, if you order beyond the included lunch.

A 2019 report described the access road as hard going in the rainy months. We check its state before wet-season departures and swap the order of stops if a section is flooded.

Vinpearl Safari opened at Ganh Dau in 2015 and now covers more than 380 ha. The safari zone is toured by a dedicated bus with animals roaming semi-wild; the open zoo is walked. With a 13:30 drop and a 16:00 pickup you have about two and a half hours, enough for the bus tour, the 14:00 show and part of the open zoo, not for the whole park. Buy the ticket yourself or ask us to add it to the quote at the published price.

Weather on a road day

This tour does not depend on the sea, so the weather rule is different from the boat trips. In rain the day runs, with the beach time shortened and more time at the pepper garden and Rach Vem. We cancel only if the authorities issue a storm warning for the island or a road on the route is flooded. Then you choose another date or a full refund of what you paid us. The rainy season is broadly May to October; July to September can bring heavy rain and strong wind.

Who this day is not for

  • Walkers who want a real hike in the national park. We drive along its edge; trails to streams and viewpoints need a different plan.
  • Anyone who wants a full day at Vinpearl Safari or VinWonders. The Safari option gives about two and a half hours, and VinWonders is not on the route.
  • Starfish-only trips in May to November: rain and cloud often mean few or none, and the reason to come is gone.
  • Guests staying in Bai Dai who have already seen Ganh Dau and Rach Vem from their hotel. The south-island boat day or the heritage half day will show you more.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the pepper garden a shopping stop?

Pepper is sold there, but the stop has a fixed length and nobody is asked to buy. You walk the vines, see how pepper is grown, and move on.

Will we see starfish?

In the dry season, roughly December to April, usually yes. In rain or heavy cloud there may be few or none. Please do not lift them out of the water.

Can children do this tour?

Yes. The walking is short and the Ganh Dau beach shelves gently. If your child needs a child seat, tell us in the form and we will confirm whether the vehicle can fit one.

What if it rains all day?

The tour runs. The beach time shrinks and the other stops get longer. We cancel only for a storm warning or a flooded road, and then you choose a new date or a full refund.
