When day tours get cancelled
Boat days on Phu Quoc are stopped by weather more often than road days. This page sets out who can stop a departure, when you hear, what you get back, and which months carry the most risk.
Three parties can stop a boat
| Who | On what basis | When |
|---|---|---|
| The authorities | Storm or high-wave forecasts; they can halt all boat departures | Any time, often the day before |
| The captain | Sea state at the pier and on the route | The morning, at the pier, and during the trip |
| Us | The forecast for the route and time of day | By 19:00 the evening before (17:00 for the squid boat) |
Authority stops are not rare. On 27 July 2023 the provincial port authority suspended ferry and speedboat services to Phu Quoc "until further notice", with waves of 1.5 to 2.75 m forecast; passengers could get refunds or reschedule. On 21 July 2025 local authorities told operators to stop inter-island boat tours until storm Wipha passed. When the authorities stop boats, no operator sails, whatever a booking says.

What happens to your booking
| Situation | Your choice |
|---|---|
| We cancel the evening before | Another date, a road tour instead, or a full refund of what you paid us |
| The captain or the authorities stop the boat at the pier | Van back to your hotel, then the same three choices |
| The boat sails, a stop is dropped or the trip comes back early | No partial refund; we tell you which stop and why |
| The cable car is closed for wind (south islands day) | Return by boat; the cable car ticket is not charged |
| The tour runs and you decide not to go | The terms in your written quote apply |
A full refund means everything you paid us for that tour. We start it on the day of the cancellation. If you bought third-party tickets yourself, such as the Hon Thom park ticket, their refund rules are the seller's, not ours, which is one reason we suggest buying them through the quote or on the day.
Road tours: a different rule
The north island day and the south heritage half day run in rain. Beach time shrinks and covered stops get longer. We cancel a road tour only for an official storm warning on the island or a flooded road on the route; you then choose another date or a full refund. A grey forecast is not a reason we cancel, and if you cancel because of it, your quote's terms apply.
Risk by month
● low disruption · ◐ more weather risk · ○ often disrupted. November to April is smooth for south-island boats; from May afternoons get choppier and departures move earlier; some routes are suspended in September and island-hopping is often unreliable in September and October. July to September can bring storms with heavy rain and strong wind.
Phu Quoc is among the places in Vietnam least often hit directly by major storms, sheltered deep in the Gulf of Thailand, so most disruption comes from wind and waves rather than direct hits. The seasons are defined slightly differently by different sources: dry November to April in the national tourism authority's guide, December to March in climate tables.

Which coast, which wind
In the north-east monsoon, roughly November to April, the west coast (Duong Dong, Bai Truong) is calm and clear, and the south islands are usually smooth. In the south-west monsoon, roughly May to October, the west coast takes big waves and murkier water, while east-coast beaches such as Bai Sao and Bai Khem turn calm. That is why the squid boat sometimes moves from the Duong Dong side to An Thoi, and why a wet-season beach day is better spent on the east coast.

Boat checks since July 2026
Island boat trips from An Thoi have operated again since 23 July 2026 after a short suspension. Authorities announced inspections of boat registration and certification, suspension of vessels that fail, mandatory life jackets and no overloading, and the provincial tourism department recommended tighter control of departures and safety briefings before every trip. On the water this means more departures checked at the pier and, occasionally, a boat held back that would have sailed before.

Planning around it
- Book boat days for the first half of your stay.
- Tell us your last free day in the form, so a cancelled date can move.
- In September and October, treat the island day as a hope, not a plan; have the north road day as the alternative.
- Keep the evening before free of commitments you cannot change, in case the decision comes at 19:00.
- Hold travel insurance that covers boat trips; it matters more than the weather.
The tour pages each repeat the rule for their own departure: south islands, squid boat, north road day, heritage half day. Areas by season are on the areas page.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Who makes the final call on a boat day?
The authorities, if they have stopped departures; otherwise the captain at the pier. We make an earlier call the evening before if the forecast is clearly bad.
Do I get my money back if the boat does not sail?
Yes. If we, the captain or the authorities cancel, you choose another date, a road tour instead, or a full refund of what you paid us.
It is raining at my hotel. Is my boat trip off?
Not necessarily. Rain alone does not stop boats; wind and waves do. Wait for our message or the pier decision.
Can I cancel myself because the forecast looks bad?
You can, but if the tour runs, the terms in your quote apply. Ask us first: if we are already watching the forecast, we will say so.
