This is the trip most visitors mean when they say "the island tour". It suits people who want to be in the water: the two morning stops are for snorkelling over shallow reef, and the afternoon is a beach and, if you pay for it, the Sun World park on Hon Thom. You need to be comfortable stepping between a pier and a small boat, sitting in an open speedboat for each crossing between islands, and spending most of the day in sun.
The shape of the day follows the pattern south-island operators publish: hotel pickup around 07:00 from Duong Dong, departure from An Thoi at about 09:00, two island stops before lunch, Hon Thom in the afternoon, and back at the An Thoi pier around 17:00 to 17:30. We run it as a join-in departure with seats sold individually, or as a private boat for one party.

Pickup windows by zone
| Zone | Pickup window | Road time to An Thoi (published legs) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bai Dai (north-west) | 06:45 – 07:15 | 40 – 50 min to Duong Dong, then 40 – 50 min on | Earliest start; the van comes south via Duong Dong |
| Duong Dong (town) | 07:30 – 08:00 | 40 – 50 min | Hotels near the night market and Dinh Cau |
| Bai Truong (Long Beach) | 07:45 – 08:15 | less than from Duong Dong | Depends where on the 20 km beach you stay |
| An Thoi (south) | 08:20 – 08:40 | a short local run | Includes Sunset Town and Bai Khem |
These are our planned windows. They are built on published drive times: about 40 to 50 minutes from Duong Dong to An Thoi, and about 40 to 50 minutes between Duong Dong and the Bai Dai and Ganh Dau area. The exact pickup minute for your hotel is sent the evening before, once the passenger list is final. Be in the lobby at the start of the window; the van waits five minutes after the time we send, then moves on to the next hotel.
Hotels outside the four zones, for example Ong Lang, Cua Can or Ham Ninh, are collected by arrangement or asked to meet the van at a hotel inside a zone. The full rules are on the pickup zones and times page.

Hour by hour
Step 1
The south islands day, in clock time
Snorkelling over the reef at Hon Gam Ghi before the midday crowd
06:45 – 08:40 · Pickup run. The van collects guests zone by zone (see the table above). Wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a towel, sun cream and cash for drinks. Leave passports at the hotel unless the evening message asks for them.
08:30 – 08:55 · An Thoi pier. Check-in with the boat crew, headcount against the passenger list, life jackets handed out and fitted, safety briefing. Life jackets stay on whenever the boat is moving.
09:00 – 11:30 · Hon Mong Tay and Hon Gam Ghi. Two short crossings to the first stops. Gam Ghi has coral close to shore; masks, snorkels and life vests are provided. Non-swimmers stay on the boat or float in a life vest near the ladder with a crew member watching.
11:30 – 13:00 · Lunch at Hon May Rut. Seafood lunch on the island (Hon May Rut Trong or Ngoai, depending on sea state and crowding), with time for a swim from the beach after eating.
13:30 – 15:30 · Hon Thom. Free time on the beach, or the Sun World park with its water park and rides if you have bought the park ticket. Guests who chose the cable car return stay on Hon Thom and ride back on their own.
15:30 – 19:00 · Back to An Thoi, then drop-off. The boat docks at An Thoi around 17:00 to 17:30 and the van runs the zones in reverse. Bai Dai guests are dropped last and can be back as late as about 19:00.
Island times follow the published schedule pattern for 4-island days. The crew may swap the order of stops to avoid crowding or wind, and the day ends later when the sea is slow.

Coming back by cable car
The Hon Thom cable car runs from the island back to Ga Anh Duong station in Sunset Town, south Phu Quoc. It holds the Guinness record for the longest non-stop three-rope cable car at 7,899.9 m, and the ride takes about 15 minutes, against about 30 minutes by boat.
| Item | Figure | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Cable car and Sun World park, adult | about 850,000 VND | published price, May 2026; confirm before travel |
| Child 1 m to under 1.4 m | about 700,000 VND | published price, May 2026; confirm before travel |
| Under 1 m | free | published price, May 2026 |
| Park opening | 09:30 – 17:00 | operator homepage; hours may change |
| Last cable car | about 17:30, in fixed slots | agency report, Aug 2026 |
The ticket covers the return cable car, the Aquatopia water park and the Exotica rides, so you pay for the park whether you use it or not. Choose this option if you want the park; if you only want the view, the boat back is already in the tour. Cable car guests either make their own way from Sunset Town or are collected there at about 17:45 for the same drop-off run.
The cable car runs year-round but stops in strong wind. If it is closed, cable car guests return on the tour boat and the ticket is not charged.

Boat safety: what the crew does, and what you do
Island trips from An Thoi run again after the July 2026 suspension, with stricter inspections since then: vessel registration checks, mandatory life jackets and no overloading. This is the routine we hold every boat to:
- Registered vessel only, with its registration and inspection papers on board. We use open speedboats and decline enclosed-cabin canoes, which the provincial tourism department asked to be reviewed for island tours.
- Headcount at the pier against the passenger list. The number on board never exceeds the vessel's registered capacity, whatever the demand that day.
- Life jackets fitted at the pier, one per person in the right size, children's sizes included, and worn whenever the boat is moving.
- Safety briefing before departure: where the spare jackets are, how to move on board, what to do if told to hold on.
- The captain can shorten the route, change the order or turn back at any point. That decision is not negotiable by guests or by us.
Your part: sit where the crew puts you, keep the jacket fastened, and tell the guide before the trip if anyone cannot swim, is pregnant or has back trouble. Open speedboats bump in any chop.

When the weather cancels the trip
Three parties can stop a boat day. The authorities can halt departures: in July 2023 the provincial port authority suspended boat services when waves of 1.5 to 2.75 m were forecast, and in July 2025 local authorities stopped inter-island boat tours ahead of storm Wipha. On the morning, the captain decides whether the sea at An Thoi is fit to sail. And we decide the evening before if the forecast is clearly bad.
| When | Who decides | What happens to your booking |
|---|---|---|
| By 19:00 the evening before | Us, on the forecast | Choose another date, a road tour instead, or a full refund of what you paid us |
| At the pier, before departure | The captain or the port authorities | Van takes you back to the hotel; same three choices |
| During the trip | The captain | Route shortened or reversed; no partial refund for dropped stops |
| Trip runs, you choose not to go | You | Normal cancellation terms in your written quote apply |
The seasonal pattern matters more than any single forecast. November to April is the smooth season. From May afternoons get choppier and operators move departures earlier; some routes are suspended in September, and An Thoi island-hopping is often unreliable in September and October. If your dates fall then, book the trip early in your stay so there is room to move it. More detail is on when day tours get cancelled.

North-east monsoon versus south-west monsoon
Phu Quoc has two wind seasons, and they decide how this trip feels. In the north-east monsoon, roughly November to April, the island is dry and sunny and the west coast is calm; the run from An Thoi through the islands is usually flat, and the water is at its clearest for snorkelling. April adds heat: midday temperatures often reach 34 to 36 °C, so the shade on Hon May Rut matters.
In the south-west monsoon, roughly May to October, waves build on the west coast and the water turns murkier. The trip still runs on many days, but with earlier starts, shorter crossings and a higher chance of a stop being dropped. July to September can bring storms with heavy rain and strong wind, though Phu Quoc is among the places in Vietnam least often hit directly.

Who this day is not for
- Anyone with back or neck problems: open speedboats slam in chop, and the front seats take the most.
- Travellers whose only possible date is in September or October and who cannot accept a cancellation.
- Families with babies or toddlers who need a sleep in the middle of the day; there is no quiet room on the boat.
- People who want a quiet island to themselves. The archipelago is busy, and lunch islands are shared with other boats.
- Anyone wanting a long day in the Sun World park: the tour gives about two hours on Hon Thom.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
I cannot swim. Is this trip still worth it?
Yes, if you are happy on a boat. Non-swimmers float in a life vest near the ladder with a crew member watching, or stay on board. The lunch island and Hon Thom have shallow beaches.
What happens if the sea is too rough on my date?
If we cancel the evening before, or the captain or port authorities stop the boat at the pier, you choose another date, a road tour instead, or a full refund of what you paid us. The van brings you back to the hotel if the stop happens at the pier.
Can we go back by cable car without the park?
The published ticket bundles the return cable car with the Sun World park, so there is no cheaper cable-car-only option in the prices we have seen. If you only want the view, the boat back is included.
How early do we need to book?
Join-in seats can sometimes be confirmed for the next day, but from December to April book several days ahead. For a private boat, send the form as soon as you know your dates.
