Ham Ninh and the east coast
The east side of Phu Quoc faces the mainland: an old fishing village known for crab, the ferry port at Bai Vong, the Ho Quoc pagoda and beaches that are calm when the west coast is rough.

What the east coast actually is
The east coast is the island's working side. It faces the Gulf towards the mainland, so there is no sunset over the sea, and it is quieter than the west. Ham Ninh is a fishing village at the foot of the Ham Ninh range, described as one of the oldest on the island. Its long wooden jetty, once the thing everyone photographed, is closed because of damage, so do not plan a visit around walking it.
South along the same coast are Ho Quoc pagoda, on the hillside above the sea, and Bai Sao and Bai Khem, the white-sand beaches of the south-east. Bai Vong, a few minutes from Ham Ninh, is the port where ferries and speedboats from the mainland arrive.

Eating in Ham Ninh
Ham Ninh is known for blue swimmer crab (ghẹ Hàm Ninh), sold at about 300,000 to 400,000 VND per kilo depending on season, and for sea urchin grilled with scallion oil. Restaurants along the shore cook what you choose; agree the weight and the price before it goes on the fire.

Ho Quoc pagoda and Bai Sao
Thien vien Truc Lam Ho Quoc stands at Suoi Lon hamlet on a site of about 110 ha, above the east coast north of Bai Sao. Building began in October 2011 and it was inaugurated in December 2012. It opens 06:00 to 18:00, entry is free, and modest dress is required.
Bai Sao, about 25 km from Duong Dong, has calm water and is often called the island's most popular beach; go early on a weekday for space. It has flagged swimming zones and lifeguards at peak hours. Both places are on our south heritage half day.

When the east coast is the right side
The east coast's season runs opposite to the west's. From May to October, the south-west monsoon pushes waves onto the west coast while east-coast beaches such as Bai Sao and Bai Khem stay calm. From November to April the west coast is the calm one, and the east is simply quieter. July to September can bring storms with heavy rain and strong wind to the whole island.

Getting here, and how long to spend
Ham Ninh is about 14 to 15 km east of Duong Dong and about five minutes from the airport, so it fits a half day by taxi or Grab, or a stop on the way to or from a flight. A car with driver for a full day costs about 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 VND. We do not run a pickup zone on the east coast; guests staying here join our tours by arrangement or meet the van at a Duong Dong hotel. See pickup zones and times.
As a place to stay, the east coast suits a quiet trip, a May-to-October beach holiday or an early ferry. As a visit, half a day is enough for the village, a crab lunch and the pagoda.

- If you need nightlife and restaurants within walking distance; Duong Dong has them.
- If you are joining several of our join-in tours; you will be collected by arrangement rather than in a zone.
