This half day is for people who want something on the island besides beaches and parks, and who want it fitted into a morning or an afternoon. It covers two well-known sites in the south that are not run by a resort: a war-era prison camp that is now a special national relic, and a large modern Zen monastery. It ends with a swim at Bai Sao so the day does not finish on the prison.

Both sites are free to enter, so most of what you pay for is the vehicle, the guide and the timing. The timing matters: the prison closes over lunch, and a tour that arrives late in the morning can find the gates shut.

In the morning the van collects the north and centre first, visits Ho Quoc, then picks up An Thoi guests on its way to the prison. In the afternoon it collects everyone and goes straight to the prison for its 13:30 reopening. These are our planned windows; the exact minute comes the evening before. Bai Dai guests have the longest ride, about 40 to 50 minutes to Duong Dong before the rest of the run. More on pickup zones and times.

Hour by hour

Step 1

Morning and afternoon versions, in clock time

The pagoda terrace over the east coast, early in the day

Morning · 06:20 – 07:40 · Pickup run through Bai Dai, Duong Dong and Bai Truong.

Morning · 07:50 – 08:35 · Ho Quoc pagoda. On the east coast north of Bai Sao, about 18 km from Duong Dong. Early is the quietest time, and the pagoda opens at 06:00. Walk up through the gate and courtyards to the main hall and the terrace looking over the sea.

Morning · 08:40 – 10:15 · An Thoi pickup, then Phu Quoc Prison. We plan the visit inside the overlap of the two published morning schedules (08:00 to 11:00), so the gates are open whichever is current. About 75 minutes on site with the guide.

Morning · 10:30 – 11:45 · Bai Sao. Swim and sit in the shade. Note the advice to avoid swimming between 11:00 and 14:00 because of UV and heat; the afternoon version is better for a long swim.

Morning · 11:50 – 13:40 · Drop-off, An Thoi first, Bai Dai last.

Afternoon · 12:00 – 13:40 · Pickup run through all four zones.

Afternoon · 13:45 – 15:00 · Phu Quoc Prison, from shortly after the 13:30 reopening.

Afternoon · 15:20 – 16:05 · Ho Quoc pagoda, well before the 18:00 closing.

Afternoon · 16:20 – 17:30 · Bai Sao, the better time for a swim. The beach faces east, so there is no sunset over the water here; for that, go to the west coast.

Afternoon · 17:35 – 19:00 · Drop-off, An Thoi first, Bai Dai last.

Phu Quoc Prison: what the site is

The site in An Thoi is officially the special national historical relic "Trại giam Phú Quốc", ranked a special national relic by Decision 2408/QĐ-TTg of 31 December 2014, after being a national relic from 1993. The protected zone covers 8.5 ha.

The French ran a prison here from June 1953 to July 1954, holding about 14,000 prisoners. From late 1955 the Republic of Vietnam built the Cay Dua (Coconut Tree) camp on the same ground, in 12 detention sections. Dates and totals differ between sources; we use the figures from press reporting on the site's restoration and say so when guests ask.

This is a memorial to the people imprisoned here. Parents should decide in advance whether it suits younger children; one adult can wait with a child near the entrance while the rest of the group goes in.

Ho Quoc pagoda and Bai Sao

Ho Quoc pagoda (Thiền viện Trúc Lâm Hộ Quốc)

A Zen monastery at Suoi Lon hamlet, on a site of about 110 ha facing the east coast. Construction began on 14 October 2011 and it was inaugurated on 14 December 2012, so it is new, large and well kept rather than old. It is an active place of worship: modest dress is required, and shoulders and knees covered is the usual standard. Bring a scarf or light trousers if you are in beachwear.

Bai Sao

In the south of the island, about 25 km from Duong Dong, with calm water. The national tourism authority calls it the island's most popular beach and suggests going early on weekdays for quiet. It has flagged swimming zones with lifeguards at peak hours. In the south-west monsoon, roughly May to October, when the west coast is rough, east-coast beaches such as Bai Sao and Bai Khem are the calm ones.

Weather and cancellations

This is a road tour and runs in rain. If it pours, the Bai Sao stop shrinks and the guide extends the covered parts of the visit. We cancel only for an official storm warning or a flooded road; you then choose another date or a full refund of what you paid us. If you cancel because the forecast looks grey, the normal terms in your quote apply. Full rules: when day tours get cancelled.

Who this half day is not for

  • Anyone who wants a sunset. Both sites close by 18:00 and Bai Sao faces east.
  • Families who would rather not explain a prison camp to young children; take the north island day instead.
  • Visitors who want a long beach day. Bai Sao gets about 70 minutes; a taxi there and back is cheaper for a full day on the sand.
  • Travellers who cannot cover shoulders and knees at the pagoda and do not want to wait outside.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Morning or afternoon?

Morning if you want the pagoda quiet and the rest of the day free. Afternoon if you want the longer, safer swim at Bai Sao and can live without the early light.

Is the prison suitable for children?

It is a memorial to the prisoners held there, and parents should decide in advance. One adult can wait with a child near the entrance while the others go in.

Can we add the Hon Thom cable car or Sunset Town?

On a private tour, yes: we can drop you at Sunset Town after Bai Sao instead of taking you back to the hotel. On a join-in seat the drop-off is your hotel.

Do we need to pay entry fees?

The prison and the pagoda were free to enter at the time of writing. Donations at the pagoda are welcome and optional.
